Synopsis
Waste energetic materials are currently disposed of by either incineration, open burning or open detonation. Each method has its disadvantages and most, if not all, will probably be banned under future environmental legislation or industry practice. Alternatives for disposal are therefore required. This paper describes an approach which has been developed by QinetiQ for the pretreatment of energetic materials, so as to convert them into simple benign chemical species suitable for subsequent clean-up by biologic means. The approach involves first a chemical stage to solvate and destroy the energetic nature of the energetic material, thereby converting it into a chemical waste that may be treated further using additional chemical or physical waste treatment technologies. The product is a feedstock suitable for biological treatment. The paper will be illustrated by the treatment of the conventional high explosives TNT and RDX.
