Synopsis

A novel, carbon based adsorbent material is being commercially developed to remove trace coloured, toxic and non-biodegradable organics from wastewaters. The adsorbent concentrates the organics onto the adsorbent surface and has been found to be effective in removing a range of contaminants to low concentrations. This paper investigates the electrochemical regeneration of the adsorbent material for reuse in a simple electrochemical cell achieving regenerated adsorption capacities in excess of 99% of its original capacity. Effective regeneration can be achieved with a treatment time as low as 10 minutes. This can be achieved with minimal loss of adsorbent over a number of adsorption/regeneration cycles using laboratory prepared solutions. The results indicate that a low cost adsorption-regeneration process can be developed with in-situ regeneration of the adsorbent. The work has been extended to include test work on dyehouse and sewage works' tertiary effluents.
