Synopsis
In many societies, transport accounts for around a third of all energy use. The need to move away from fossil fuels is more urgent, and biofuels are seen as the best transition technology. Bioethanol, biogas and biodiesel are all feasible approaches and have proven track records in early adopter countries. Each can be utilized by existing fleets of vehicles with little or no modification. While practical trials in southeast England concluded that anhydrous bioethanol suitable for blending with petrol requires large-scale production to be viable, biodiesel could be produced more economically at small or medium-scales. The July 2002 excise duty reduction, together with low investment cost allows the fuel to be marketed at a price comparable with fossil diesel. Flexible and low cost plant design will allow improved oil conversion processes to be assimilated as research matures. The paper highlights technical performance, environmental impact and cost/benefit aspects and a vision for a network of farm-based businesses is proposed.
