Synopsis
Research and development is underway to recycle more waste materials within the United Kingdom, through the Governments diversion of Landfill Tax funds intoinvestment programmes like the Waste and Resources Management Programme (WRAP). This white paper examines the UK approach, as well as other good ideas that business has come up with. The need for the development of these programmes is being hampered by that of the large-scale funding necessary in order to produce recycled goods, ready for the mass market. However, before it is possible to overcome this obstacle, the market for recycled products must first be developed, so that there is a demand to meet the massive investment required, including the cost of the facilities needed to get the products to the consumer. The paper also stresses that balancing the need for investment with research and development into the market demand must also be done in an environmentally friendly manner.
