This paper describes Bord na Móna Environmental Consultancy Services holistic approach to odour measurement and its chemical characterisation. It will also assess the potential impact of such an approach on the receiving environment by means of air dispersion modelling. Various sources of odour from municipal treatment plants, baling stations, chemical industries, rendering plants and piggeries will be examined. The effectiveness of applying chemical and GC-based monitoring methods for characterisation of the odorous compounds in ambient and industrial air will also be illustrated. The paper will finally demonstrate how air dispersion modelling can be used to predict whether the concentrations of odorous pollutants will impact negatively on the receiving environment.
