Martyn Duffin has worked for Arup in Bristol since 1987 and currently leads a team of engineers providing geotechnical and environmental advice to the Bristol office as well as directly to clients. He has extensive experience of site appraisals, engineering geological mapping, design and supervision of site investigations, foundations and other geotechnical installations in a wide range of soil and rock types in the UK and overseas, including types found offshore. This involved preliminary desk studies, design, letting and supervision of site investigations and preparation of interpretive reports, foundation design and supervision of subsequent construction. Recent projects have varied from small housing sites through large town centre redevelopments featuring deep basements, to marinas and industrial structures necessitating extensive infrastructure design.
Since moving to Bristol he has gained detailed and wide knowledge of local ground conditions and established good working relationships with key staff in local authorities and other organisations. His particular skill includes all aspects of site investigation and foundation design including geocontamination investigations and risk assessments and subsequent remedial works. He has also trained in using abseiling and other rope access techniques to Industrial Rope Access Trade Association Level 1 in order to facilitate rock face inspections.
