Synopsis
Despite the general ban on the use of asbestos materials in the UK, asbestos-related deaths are increasing annually. Recent research shows the largest group of workers now at risk are involved in the building trades. Workers such as electricians and plumbers who are commonly involved in refurbishment work. It is estimated that 4.4 million buildings in the UK contain asbestos and it is predicted that the death rate among such as the aforementioned tradesmen will increase rapidly over the next ten years. This paper will give the full background history behind the increasing death rate. It will discuss in detail how the August 2002 modifications to the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations will attempt to combat this growing problem.
