Thermal Oxidizer Systems to Meet VOC NOx and/or CO Low Emission Requirements and Low NOx Gas Combustor/Incinerator/Scrubber


With combustion experience since 1984, Nacah Tech has designed thermal oxidizers for many process applications, including those successfully operating for Degussa, Solutia, Cyanco, BF Goodrich, Stone and Webster (Malaysian Chemical Co.-Pty), Asia Silicones Monomers, PT Globechem, Ashland Chemical, but most importantly will be for you.  These successes have been generated by becoming quite familiar with the customer`s operation methods; # of streams to be treated, composition and concentration range from each stream, chlorinated (halogen) or acid presence, N-compound presence, air sources, quench water or air requirements, pre or post oxidizer motives, oxygen content, DRE requirement for organics, VOC`s and CO, etc.  Nacah thus brings knowledge of past designs and new innovative designs to best suit the specified parameters.  These parameters determine the best oxidizer design that includes the optimum: heat recovery versus capital cost, process gas introduction method and location, oxidizer operating temperature to meet the desired DRE, design and material selection of heat exchanger/boiler (if heat recovery is needed), the refractory selection that provides long life in designated service, and the ability to handle fluctuating inlet; flow rates, heat release from the streams, and their temperatures.  Other device selections such as LEL monitors and flow meters, etc. are selected for optimum reaction time and method of measurement.  This is done with our experience and the customer`s input for best operation.

Nacah specializes in economical custom designed thermal oxidizer systems.  We have a wide experience in custom oxidizers.  We use our experience to generate the best design using the optimum components for an economical system. 

We offer free, up front assistance with emission flow rates and DRE`s that may help users interface with the regulators.  Customers may also receive accurate budget pricing.  I trust that our qualifications and abilities meet the high standards of today`s user.  Nacah is pleased to review application(s), size and design the unit, and prepare a bid for a thermal oxidizer/combustion system, as needed.  We`ll review the needs and offer design options to optimize the system.  We then trust that the options convey their value added.

We also provide associated oxidizer service, stacks, ductwork, combustion consulting, upgrades, bio fuel burning steam generators for small power production systems to join customer`s gasifier system, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) of NOx, Waste Heat Boilers, etc. as needed.  All are available quite competitively and economically.  We provide designs and engineering while subcontracting the fabrication.  Together, we will determine the best solution/approach, most economically.

Combustion and Process Engineering Service

Nacah Tech has worked for Fortune 500 companies to small businesses to help them meet their emission and efficiency goals for their process/plant.  Nacah is hired to help the client solve difficult problems.  Not only issues concerning emissions are resolved, but simply to help your plant operate its combustion systems, kilns, rotary hearths, furnaces, oxidizers, most effectively to reduce downtime, scrap, fuel costs, and increase productivity of both the unit and the workers.  Call Nacah Tech for engineering assistance with your combustion related equipment.  We recently contributed as an advisory board member for a smoke/soot problem, completed an oxidizer retrofit of an oxygen analyzer to improve fuel efficiency, and visited several client plants to witness the operation in order to make expert improvement recommendations on the production process and the combustion system.

Fluid Bed Bead Activated Carbon VOC Concentration System

Recently, we have found great interest in our very high VOC concentrating system; a fluid bed concentrator that reduces the flow so much that the thermal oxidizer is very small.  It concentrates significantly more than other competitive carbon methods.  It is also economical where fixed beds or RTO`s are not.  Nacah Tech integrates the ECTI fluid bed carbon system (and desorber) with the thermal oxidizer.  It is normally more competitive than alternative methods of controlling high volumes with low concentrations and requires little/no replacement costs.  Works great on large volumes

Thermal oxidizer systems are often supplied as part of packages.  Packages are designed for any of the following: Low NOx generation, post combustion NOx treatment (SNCR or SCR), quench systems, acid scrubbers (sulfuric, HCl, etc.), boilers, heat exchangers, stacks, etc. One example of this is as follows.  While this is a sample of the designs available through Nacah Tech LLC, this unit was for sale used by a third party after installation.

  • Designed to meet EPA ``MACT`` (maximum achievable control technology) standards
  • This complete combustor/incinerator/scrubber system consists of

- A PCC gas combustor/incinerator/thermal oxidizer with multiple injection points, low-NOx multi-stage burner
- Vertically fired submerged quench suitable for insoluble particulate removal
- An Anderson cleanable high efficiency air filtration (CHEAF) scrubber-demister to remove submicron particles, aerosols, and acids gases if necessary
- An Anderson 5-element wet candle type polishing filter to remove submicron particles - the final stage of this air pollution control train
- Triple redundant fail-safe control instrumentation on all the above units

  • Buyers interested in this system may also wish to consider our larger capacity combined Gas combustor/liquid hazardous waste incinerator described elsewhere
  • The original acquisition cost of the equipment in this project --excluding engineering and Construction was in excess of $3 million

Capacities/Performance

  • Gas combustor residence time at a throughput of 15,000 acfm is 1.5 seconds.
  • The system destruction removal efficiency (DRE) is greater than 99.99%.
  • Design operating temperature range is 1650oF--2150oF.
  • At 2% excess air, maximum NOx is 100 ppm.
  • The CHEAF scrubber/demister has an outlet flow of 9,200 acfm.
  • System minimum submicron particulate scrubber removal design efficiency is 99.9%

Thermal Oxidizer Systems provided include Low BTU gas combustors incorporated with downstream equipment.

  • Ran for 10 months; fully proven performance; shut down due to plant closure.
  • This complete combustor/incinerator/scrubber system consists of

- A 78` high 14` diameter combustor with two stage low NOx burner capable of burning gaseous and liquid wastes. Overall system turndown capacity 5: 1
- A vertical fired burner (to protect refractory) with deep submerged quench chamber. Minimal wet/dry interface suitable for insoluble particulate removal
- An Anderson cleanable high efficiency air filtration (CHEAF) scrubber-demister to remove submicron particles. Self cleaning filter media
- A 3000 hp radial blade fan capable of 90 inches static pressure
- Redundant fail-safe controls

  • This system will be marketed as an ``integrated package”.
  • Buyers interested in this system may also wish to consider our never-used smaller capacity thermal oxidizer system described elsewhere.
  • The original acquisition cost of this project was $34 million ($12 million equipment)

  • The burner is rated at 180 million BTU/hr
  • NOx generation < 0.12 lbs. per mbtu at 1800ºF -  2100ºF
  • The CHEAF scrubber/demister has an outlet flow of 160,000 acfm
  • Submicron particulate scrubbing removal efficiency > 95%
