Drum Compacting and Crushing: Vyleater Vial Disposal System, RAM FLAT Compactors and Drum Crushers and PAK-MORE® Hold Down Disks

S & G Enterprises, Inc. was incorporated in January of 1961 for the purpose of developing ideas into marketable products. We sell solutions - not just equipment. Our strength is mating the equipment with the customer's application.

The original Ram Flat Compactor was developed and sold in the 1960's for strictly drum crushing. Additional models were later designed when various customers expressed a need for compaction within a drum as well as drum crushing. The Ram Flat Compactor is sold to the customer who is looking for a quality, low maintenance machine. The product line has 8 standard models with numerous variations and options that include both inside the drum compaction as well as empty drum crushing.

The Vyleater Vial Crusher was developed in 1986 because Ram Flat Compactor customers, normally in the research business, were looking for an easy way to dispose of glass and plastic scintillation vials.   The end product is a direct result of their input.   This fact, we feel, makes our machine the best overall design for the recovering of liquid scintillation cocktail. Other applications include environmental groundwater samples, and pharmaceutical product destruction.

An Enhanced version incorporates a shredder design that allows drug screening laboratories an easy method to dispose of urinalysis samples while diagnostic laboratories use it to dispose of cytology vials.

Vyleater Vial Disposal System

The Vyleater Vial Disposal System destroys small vials and separates the liquid contents, greatly reducing disposal costs. The simple and effective design automatically separates the liquid from the vials, sending the plastic or glass vial fragments to one destination and the liquid to another.

  • Content recovery is now practical when thousands of vials per day are in need of disposal.   The ability to easily collect liquid for sewer disposal or in bulk containers means reduced disposal costs.
  • Product destruction for cosmetic and pharmaceutical makers means complete control over what happens to the vials.   Because the vials are totally obliterated, nothing finds its way back into circulation.
  • Specimen disposal is easier for laboratories by allowing the Vyleater to not only collect the liquid for disposal but also destroy any identifying marks on the containers.
  • Reduce storage space that is required for long-term storage of the vials prior to disposal.
  • Reduce exposure to hazardous materials by technicians. There is no need to come in direct contact with the vial or the contents.   Vapor exposure is eliminated, as technicians no longer have to spend hours hand pouring the liquid out of the vials.
  • Ergonomic concerns are eliminated by reducing repetitive motion due to prying tops off vials by hand.
  • Lower disposal costs by reducing the overall waste volume. Why pay for the disposal of a full, lab-packed drum when the vials are half empty?  Some 55-gallon drums may contain only 5-gallons of actual hazardous fluid.

We can customize your needs to resolve the varying requirements of diagnostic labs, radiation safety officers, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and process manufactures alike.   Options include automatic vial washing, automatic loading and explosion-proof designs.

Vyleater Vial Disposal System

RAM FLAT® Compactors allow their users to significantly reduce the costs of disposing of hazardous and radioactive waste.  This is done by reducing the volume of the waste by compacting the material right into the drum. Some of the Ram Flat Compactor models are designed specifically to crush empty drums into metal pancakes. But the real bonus is the ability to configure one Ram Flat Compactor to both crush empty drums and to compact waste into drums. For almost 35 years we have designed Ram Flat Compactors around these parameters:

  • Quality design
  • Safe operation
  • Flexible design

Ram Flat Means Quality Design

  • Top-Quality, USA-made electrical, hydraulic & pneumatic components
  • Easy to use controls: Down, Up & Emergency Stop pushbutton control
  • Adjustable compaction Pressure on most models
  • Unitized, welded-body construction for long life
  • Liquid tight electrical conduit
  • All steel hydraulic tubing - no flexible hoses.
  • Large oil reservoir for efficient cooling of the hydraulic circuit and seal protection

Ram Flat Means Safe Operation

All Ram Flat Compactor models are designed to keep the operator safe whether the unit is being used for empty drum crushing or inside-the-drum compaction.

  • Enclosed Compaction Chamber
  • Interlocked Compaction Chamber Door
  • Few Moving Parts
  • Safe Control Systems
  • Explosion-Proof Controls

Enclosed Compaction Chamber

A primary safety feature is that the compaction chamber of the unit completely encloses the drum during the crushing or compaction cycle.   This not only keeps the operators hands away from the moving compaction head, but also protects the operator in case any dry waste material, dust or liquid may be inadvertently expelled from the drum during the compaction cycle.

Interlocked Compaction Chamber Door

All Ram Flat models are designed with a safety door interlock.   In short, it requires that the door be closed and latched before the unit can be operated.   If the chamber door is opened in the middle of a cycle, all compaction head travel stops immediately. In addition, the operator must re-initiate the piston's direction once the door is closed again.   The unit will not begin crushing again until the operator either pushes the start or up pushbutton. This circuit design also helps prevent accidental startup if the unit is being maintained.   For example, if a maintenance person has shut off electrical power to the machine and is inside the chamber with the door open, the cycle will not begin again if someone unexpectedly turns the power on again.

Few Moving Parts

Aside from the compaction cylinder, the only externally accessible moving part is the motor/pump coupling connection.   This is hidden inside the motor adapter on top of the compactor and well out of reach of the operator.   All other hydraulic components are located inside the hydraulic reservoir.

Safe Control Systems

Our standard control design is powered using 115v electrical.   This safer 115v is created regardless of the full load voltage (230V or 460V) that the unit is wired to operate with. The majority of the control circuit is housed inside the NEMA 1 enclosure.   (Other enclosure types are available by request.)  With this type of control circuit, a magnetic proximity switch requires making metal to metal contact with the chamber door to close the electrical circuit and allow the unit to run.

Explosion-Proof Controls

Yes, we do explosion-proof. Whether your application or installation site requires it, we build both hydraulic and pneumatic control logic - depending upon which model is chosen.   There are no electrical components on the unit with the exception of the hydraulic pump motor itself.   A mechanical lever arm is used to make physical contact with the chamber door to allow the control circuit to operate.

Ram Flat Means Flexible Design

Ram Flat Compactors are versatile machines that can be configured to do what you want them to do.

With field proven experience in compacting materials like paint filters, radioactive lab waste and even simple product destruction, the Ram Flat Compactor has the ability to be customized to meet your specific application.

RAM FLAT Compactor

Material springback obviously reoccupies valuable drum space and adds substantially to disposal costs for paper, plastics, cardboard, and hazardous waste - particularly materials exhibiting springback or "memory" characteristics. Thus the remarkable Pak-More Hold Down Disk was created.

The disk had to be tough, durable, and capable of taking great compacting pressures to reach those lowest compaction levels and holding that position. Visualize the compactor ram retracting - leaving the disk in place at its lowest position. The disk, by virtue of five locking tabs, securely wedges itself against the drum wall.

Using one or two Pak-More Disks per drum, each disk compressing a volume of material to its lowest compaction level, you will significantly store up to 70% more waste.

Consider too, no special tools or skills are required to assemble the Pak-More Disk. It’s nothing complex. The disks work well with any 55 gallon drum compactor such as our 55AR Ram Flat® Compactor shown here.

To actually compact, place the Pak-More Disk over the material in the drum. Begin the process of compaction.   At the lowest level of compaction, the Pak-More Disk locks in place. No springback. Repeat compaction for capacity drum use.

The Pak-More Disk stops anywhere along the length of a 55 gallon drum - to the ultimate point of compaction.   It is not necessary to lock into the drum rings for retention.

Consider this unique, important benefit: the Pak-More Disk is easily and safely removed simply by loosening the locking tabs and releasing locking pressure.

For minimal storage advantages, Pak-More Disks are shipped unassembled; however, assembly is uncomplicated - a matter of seconds.
