Environmental Engineering Services: for Land Development and Redevelopment, Environmental Restoration and Site Assessments, and Solid and Hazardous Waste Management
Environmental Engineering
In today's regulatory climate, no one can afford to take environmental risk for granted. When assessing, restoring and redeveloping contaminated properties, you need expert professional assistance. CSD Environmental Services, Inc. (CSD) provides the technical expertise you need. CSD is a full-service civil and environmental engineering firm based in central Illinois. CSD specializes in the planning, design, evaluation, management, and observation of land development and environmental restoration projects. CSD offers a broad range of services in the fields of environmental management and civil/environmental engineering which includes: Environmental Site Assessments Aboveground & Underground Storage Tank Services Environmental Restoration Solid And Hazardous Waste Management Environmental Drilling and Sampling (Heartland Drilling & Remediation) Industrial, Commercial & Residential Planning Water and Wastewater Management Stormwater Management Water Quality Management Environmental Engineering through Land Development and Environmental Restoration In addition, our association with other quality civil and environmental engineering firms in the Chicago and St. Louis metropolitan areas allows us to offer comprehensive and cost-effective civil engineering, environmental engineering, land surveying and environmental management services. In this way, we provide our clients throughout Illinois and Missouri an integrated approach to solving multi-faceted problems. The company's size, expertise, and experience make us a unique resource, ready to respond to any environmental management and/or land development challenge. CSD was founded in 1992 by Cindy S. Davis, P.G., a former manager at the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Since then, CSD has grown to include personnel from disciplines including civil and environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, land surveying, computer-aided drafting, environmental science, cartography, environmental drilling and geology. This combination of education and professional skills allows CSD to offer our clients a network of qualified professionals capable of providing complete services in the areas of engineering and applied sciences. CSD also maintains an outstanding team of research and development experts, for the exploration of alternative remedial technologies. In 1998, CSD was joined by Moss, Johnson & Associates, Ltd., a long-standing civil and environmental engineering firm from the central Illinois area. From its inception in 1972, Moss, Johnson & Associates has strived to unobtrusively integrate civilization with the environment by using a multi-disciplinary approach incorporating economics, sociology, ecology, engineering and construction. This merger allows CSD to provide unsurpassed expertise in the fields of environmental management and land development. In 2000, CSD formed an independent environmental drilling and contracting company known as Heartland Drilling & Remediation, Inc. (HDR). HDR provides expert, high-quality environmental drilling, sampling, and remediation services throughout Illinois and surrounding states. HDR uses a compact AMS 9600 Power Probe™, mounted on a Case 1845C skid steer. Our rig’s compact design allows nearly limitless accessibility and maneuverability. The equipment we use is ideally suited for environmental applications and can be converted on-site from direct push to hollow-stem augering in less than 60 seconds. The combined ability to provide both probing and augering with a single rig has proven to be extremely valuable and cost-effective for our clients.

Bioremediation
CSD offers cutting-edge consulting services during both the site investigation and design phases of ORC® and HRC® enhanced in-situ bioremediation projects. CSD will recommend the appropriate sampling and analysis required to demonstrate the effectiveness of in-situ bioremediation in soil types ranging from sands and gravel to silts and clays. ORC® and HRC® Enhanced Natural Attenuation (Bioremediation) CSD has developed innovative risk-based design aids for ORC® and HRC® application which prevent the typical contaminant ``rebound`` phenomenon experienced so often in fine-grained soils when using other design software. CSD's software employs principles of consecutive reactions, rate-limited desorption, equilibrium partitioning and enzyme-catalyzed microbial reactions to estimate the minimum quantity of ORC® / HRC® and the minimum number of applications required to reach applicable groundwater quality standards. CSD allowed Regenesis to review portions of our design software during the development of their third-generation design software. The software currently provided by Regenesis also incorporates some of the same principles used by CSD to prevent contaminant rebound. However, many design approaches do not incorporate the use of risk-based objectives, which typically greatly affects the overall cost of remediation. Through the use of our risk based design aids, CSD can reach applicable clean up objectives while generally reducing the recommended quantity of ORC®, often by more than 50%. Using some typical contaminant concentrations and physical properties for a fine grained aquifer, other design estimates recommend that 10,800 lbs of ORC® would be required to remediate a specific hypothetical contaminant plume. Using identical model parameters, and CSD’s risk-based bio-optimization model, the total estimated quantity of ORC® required to reach applicable clean-up objectives is 5,460 lbs. Design Aids for Quantification of Multiple Extraneous Oxygen Sinks Using CSD’s design aids, multiple treatment zones of varying contaminant concentrations and physical properties can be quickly evaluated in order to determine the optimum ORC® / HRC® application strategy. CSD's software is also flexible in that it allows for quantification of multiple extraneous oxygen sinks and macro-nutrient availability, as well as evaluating the effects of nutrient addition. (Extraneous oxygen sink analysis was omitted from the above illustration in order to provide a direct comparison with other software.) CSD also provides both vertical and horizontal pressurized ORC® / HRC® slurry injection through our affiliated company, Heartland Drilling & Remediation Services, Inc.
