Petroleum Contamination Pumping System

Magnum Spill Buster-Dedicated, Automatic, Free Product Recovery System

The Magnum Spill BusterTM is an advanced, automated, free phase petroleum contamination pumping system. It is specifically designed to remove floating petroleum product (LNAPL) from the water table via a 2`` or larger diameter well. The unique auto-seeking device allows the pump intake to automatically follow the elevation of the oil/water interface as it fluctuates. This is very useful in areas where the water table elevation fluctuates often. The Magnum Spill Buster will not pump water. The system can also be easily configured to recover heavier-than-water (DNAPL) contaminants. Water depression operation can be added with the addition of a Water Depression Control Module and a Grundfos Redi-Flo 3 environmental water pump.

The Magnum consists of three interactive modules: the control box, the probe, and the auto seeker.

The Magnum Spill Buster Control Box is a processor based control system that coordinates and displays system operations. The control box features a connector ``pouch`` which provides easy access to control cable hookups, control parameter settings, and 12/24 VDC or 120/240 VAC 50/60 Hz input power hookups. The control box also provides an RS-485 communications port for connection to up to 31 other units and a personal computer (PC) up to 3,000 ft. away.

The Magnum Spill Buster Probe is 1.93 inches in diameter and features our Alpha-ArrayTM Interface Sensor to detect the water/ product interface. This sensor is a multiple field array, all solid state, monolithic, noncontact, fluid-interface sensor that is a spin-off of spacecraft fuel gauging developed for NASA. The use of this interface sensor in the environmental industry is unique. Since it is a noncontact sensor, it is highly immune to fouling, which is a problem with virtually all other types of sensing methods (including conductive, float, optical and even radio frequency methods). The product pump is a powerful 12vdc unit originally developed for the diesel truck market and much modified to withstand its use with the dirty and degraded products found in recovery wells.

The Auto Seeker is a small, motorized reel assembly located at the top of the wellhead. It automatically raises and lowers the probe to follow the product interface and is only limited by the length of the cable. This makes the system operation highly efficient even with large changes in the level of the ground water. The cable fully reels onto the Auto Seeker, allowing the system to freely operate in a vault as small as 24`` x 24`` x 22`` deep.

Magnum Spill BusterTM features

- Low profile Auto Seeker motorized reel system allows installation in smaller well head spaces and prevents cable tangling
- The system can be used with ``floaters`` (LNAPLs) or ``sinkers`` (DNAPLs) with a minor adjustment to the control box
- Water depression can be added to the system with our Water Depression Module and water pump
- New ``slimline`` connectors for the cable ends are extremely rugged and easy to clean
- Plastic enclosure with connector ``pouch`` provides easy access to the cables, adjustable controls, and AC wiring
- True 24 VDC battery/solar panel operation is available even for deep wells

Petroleum Contamination Pumping

Spill Buddy- Portable Product Pump, and Spill Buddy Pro- Combination Portable Product Pump/ Interface Tape

The Spill Buddy™ is a compact, manually operated, floating petroleum product (LNAPL) pump, which uses sensors based on proven Spill Buster™ technology to determine the product/water interface. The Spill Buddy can also be used to remove heavier-than-water (DNAPL) contaminants.

The Spill Buddy Pro is a combination of a manually operated product pump and an interface probe. This system is used to measure the ``depth-to-product`` and ``depth-to-water`` in test wells. The integrated measuring tape and audible feedback allows the user to determine the thickness of the product layer.

Using either system, the operator can pump the product from the well by activating a small switch located on the reel assembly. Pumped product is discharged through a hose on the back side of the reel assembly, into a collection container.

Use of the Spill Buddy and Spill Buddy Pro systems is very cost effective when compared to the traditional method of product recovery from groundwater monitoring wells. Traditionally, product has been recovered by using a hand-bailing device. This requires the collection of groundwater in addition to the product. The contaminated water is then treated as hazardous waste and must be disposed of accordingly. Hand-bailing is also very time consuming, while use of the Spill Buddy and Spill Buddy Pro to remove free phase contamination from groundwater monitoring wells is quick and easy.

Spill Buddy and Spill Buddy Pro both employ our patented ALPHA-ARRAY™ sensors on the probe that detect the interface between the product and the water. The audible feedback allows the user to determine the water surface and allows product skimming. The compact probe with enclosed pump easily fits into wells as small as 2`` in diameter. The rugged, lightweight, and convenient Spill Buddy units can skim up to 0.7 gallons of product per minute. Both Spill Buddy units also have a self contained, rechargeable battery for the sensor electronics and pump. The battery is rechargeable from a 12 VDC source (car battery or cigarette lighter socket-optional) or the wall transformer provided with the unit. The units will operate for up to one hour of continuous pumping. (approx. 40 gallons) per charge.
