Biopile technology, involves excavation of contaminated soil, piling of petroleum-contaminated soils/sands into piles or heaps and then simulating aerobic microbial activity by aeration with spargers/mechanical means and augmenting appropriate nutrients for microorganisms. Depending on the nature and concentration of contaminant and type of soil, the treatment time may vary from couple of weeks to few months. However, treatment time is usually 40-60% shorter as compared to the conventional landfarming. |
