Water Control Devices
Heavy Duty Cast Iron Slide Gates Sluice gates are comprised of two major parts: the frame and the slide. Both the frame and slide have embedded bronze seating strips, which are pressed together by the attached wedging devices when the gate is closed. The frame outlines the opening in the wall that requires flow control. The slide, when fully inserted into the frame, blocks the flow of liquid. As the slide is raised it proportionately uncovers the area of the opening, until the opening is completely uncovered. Water pressure pushing the slide toward the wall is called seating head, whereas water pressure pushing from within the opening is called unseating head. Gates are rated by the amount of head that they are capable of withstanding. For example, a model 55-20 gate can withstand 55 feet or 17.0 meters of seating head, and 20 feet or 6.0 meters of unseating head. Applications: Process facilities where unexpected maintenance shutdowns would be prohibitively costly Areas where consistent, low rates of leakage over time is important Dams, dykes, critical installations or high head applications where reliability, durability and long-term performance are critical Installations where debris may become trapped between the gate slide and frame during operation Fabricated Slide Gates Where the initial capital cost is of primary importance, the fabricated gate will offer good value. Fabricated gates generally incorporate resilient seating faces (plastic or rubber) to achieve water tightness; these seats will or may require replacement with time and use. Economical fabricated gates do not employ wedging devices to allow for adjustment due to wearing. Armtec manufactures a standard size range, suitable for most applications. Custom sizes can be fabricated with a cost increase. This may be required where gates must be built to fit existing structures or where certain processes require special sizing. Applications: Water treatment plants Waste water treatment Hydro electric power plants Flood control Irrigation Overshot Gates Overshot gates are designed for use in open-channel flows where upstream level control is required. Armtec’s unique design includes a bottom hinge and a channel-floor recess that enables the fully opened gate to lie flat on the channel floor. The premise of the design is that of a moveable weir. Overshot gates are operated by single or tandem cable hoists, specifically designed by Armtec for these applications. An overshot gate consists of a gate leaf, hinge, and hoist mechanism. The 600 series is a self-contained unit that includes side plates and a hoist support. The action of this gate can be likened to a drawbridge hinged across the bottom of a vertical walled channel. When the gate position is horizontal (fully open), water flows through the channel end of the gate, water flows over the lip while the channel sides restrict it. Water backs up behind the gate as it reaches an angle of 60degrees, as excess water flows over the end of the gate leaf. The overshot gate can be set to any position between 0 o and 60 degrees. (0 degrees being flat or open), therefore establishing upstream level control. Applications: Irrigation canals Flood control Dam spillways Radial Gates Radial gates are designed for wide and unobstructed waterways where a light-weight economical gate with minimal hoist effort to open and close is required. A radial gate consists of a curved gate leaf, rubber seals, support arms, seal rubbing embedment and embedded pivot points. The gate leaf is of a welded construction varying in width and height as required by the size of the opening. Embedded rubbing seats are mounted flush with the wall to provide a smooth flat surface for the seals to slide on as the gate opens and closes. Water pressure applied against the curved gate leaf is transmitted through the support arms into the pivot points, which are embedded in the concrete wall. Since the gate leaf is curved, the water also applies a pressure upward, thereby lowering the lifting force required. A smaller hoist is therefore necessary as compared to other types of gates. Radial gates are used primarily for upstream level control in open-channel installations. Flow is always one-way, against the face of the gate. Low lifting forces are required for radial gate operation, which is normally by cable hoists. Applications: Irrigation canals Flood control Dam structures Miscellaneous Gates and Valves Armtec provides a variety of gates and valves to the Water Control Industry. These are: Cutwater Gates Top and Side-opening Fabricated Flap Gates Shear Gates Bonneted Gates Telescopic Valves Ground Water Pressure Relief Valves Flow Divider Gates Mud Valves Stop Logs Hand Pulls Roller Gates Roller gates are designed to control flow through large waterway openings, where economy and ease of operation are important. They are also the most versatile gates in terms of size. A roller or fixed-wheel gate consists of a fabricated steel slide, cast iron rollers, and rubber seals. The gate leaf is a box-like design of welded construction and varies in width and height as required by the size of the opening. The thickness is determined by the water pressure. Slots at the sides of the gate opening are required for the rails and contact faces for side seals. The thrust developed from water pressure against the gate is transmitted through the rollers to the rails and into the structure. The lift capacity required to open the gate under maximum operating conditions is minimized as the thrust is transferred to rolling friction. Applications: Small hydro electric plants Water treatment plants Flood control Dam structures
