Storm Water Management

Storm Water Quality Control Systems for removal of trash, oil, grit and suspended solids from storm water run-off.  Our range includes hydrodynamic filtration and screening systems.  Our systems meet storm water regulations by efficiently removing contaminated sediment, floating hydrocarbons and debris.  The unique design of our systems allows for easy inspection and unobstructed maintenance access.  Comprehensive lab, field and third-party test results are available to demonstrate well-proven performance of our systems.  Our engineers will design site-specific solutions for all applications and rainfall conditions.

Our Hydrodynamic system uses a combination of swirl-concentrator and flow-control technology to maximize treatment.  These features provide for the physical separation and capture of sediments and free oils and work to prevent re-suspension and release of previously trapped pollutants.

Our syphon-actuated filtration systems are designed to meet the most stringent regulatory requirements.  The systems target a full range of pollutants in urban runoff.  Using a variety of filter media total suspended solids (TSS), soluble heavy metals, oil and grease and total nutrients are effectively removed.  Our patented siphon-actuated surface cleaning system prevents surface blinding and extends cartridge life cycles, therefore reducing maintenance.

Our screening products protect downstream waterways by targetting and removing trash, debris and coarse contaminants at high flow rates.  Direct screening of flows guarantees removal of solids larger than the screen perforations.  Screen blinding is prevented by a patented siphon-actuated surface cleaning mechanism that draws highly energetic air bubbles across the surface of the screen.

Geotextiles

Non-woven & Woven Geotextiles

Armtec carries a full line of Non-woven & Woven Geotextiles for use in a variety of applications. Low initial cost and highly predictable performance make geotextiles very suitable for cost-effective solutions in soil engineering.

  • Soil separation
  • Filtration
  • Erosion control
  • Sub-grade stabilization
  • Protection for membrane liners
  • Shoreline protection
  • Asphalt and chip seal roadway overlays

High Tenacity Geotextiles

Armtec's High Tenacity Geotextiles are commonly used as integral components in reinforced soil structures such as retaining walls, over steepened slopes and embankments constructed on weak soils. These geosynthetics provide tensile strength to the soil, thus enhancing its shear strength characteristics. This enables walls, slopes and embankments to be constructed cost-effectively and quickly. Mirafi geosynthetics, from Armtec, that are used for soil reinforcement, have been designed to offer the optimum in performance characteristics.

Applications:

  • Embankments on weak sub grades
  • Sub-grade Reinforcement
  • Sub-grade Stabilization
  • Over steepened Slope Reinforcement
  • Permanent Retaining Walls
  • Temporary Retaining Walls
  • Voids Bridging
  • Veneer

GeoGrids

Geogrids are open-mesh polymer-based geosynthtics designed to enhance the performance of granular soils. By combining the tensile strength of the synthetic grid with the friction and interlock properties between the soil and the grid a composite soil-grid structure can be constructed. The chemical resistance of the grid ensures long-lasting structures with high performance.

Two types of grid are available:

Uni-Axial geogrids are used in the following applications:

  • Soil reinforcement
  • Block or segmental retaining walls
  • Steep slope reinforcement
  • Void bridging in weak soils

Bi-Axial geogrids are used in the following applications:

  • Base reinforcement for roadways, parking lots, railways
  • Base reinforcements for high embankments
  • Base reinforcement for stockpiles, aggregate storage etc.
  • Slope reinforcement

Erosion Control Products

The optimum erosion control measure is well-established vegetation. In order to promote rapid establishment of newly planted or seeded vegetation, erosion control blankets and turf reinforcement mats are used. Armtec carries a comprehensive line of these products.

Products available include:

  • Straw blankets
  • Coconut fibre blankets
  • Synthetic fibre mats
  • Heavy duty synthetic turf reinforcement mats

The products are pre-engineered for use in:

  • Channels
  • Slopes
  • Areas requiring surface erosion control
  • Landscaping projects
  • Fascias on geosynthetic-reinforced steep slopes

Sheet Piling

Armtec manufactures lightweight, drivable sheet piling for use in many applications. Sheet piling is available in galvanized or black steel and is of the interlocking edge type. Standard widths of 500mm and lengths of up to ten meters are available. Individual sections are available with pulling holes if required.

Applications:

  • Trench shoring
  • Culvert headwalls
  • Culvert cut-off walls
  • Freshwater shore protection
  • Freshwater docks
  • Loading ramps

Bin Wall Retaining Wall System

Armtec Bin Wall is a sectional gravity-type retaining wall system manufactured from rugged and durable galvanized steel components. The system consists of a series of interconnected open-bottom steel boxes, infilled with granular material, with a height and depth designed to resist overturning and sliding forces typical of a gravity wall system. All connections are bolted at site.

Standard factory components can be used to construct walls with heights up to ten metres and depths approaching four metres. Standard section width is 3 metres. Walls can be installed on side slopes, lateral slopes, on curves and with changes in elevation either below the wall or above it.

Applications:

  • Road or rail retaining walls
  • Loading ramps
  • Bridge abutments
  • Freshwater marinas
  • Solid waste transfer units
  • Aircraft blast walls (military applications)

GeoWeb Cellular Confinement System

Geoweb is a cellular synthetic mat, designed to be used in conjunction with granular or weaker soils in order to create an engineered-grade composite fill material. Confinement of a weaker soil within the individual cells of the Geoweb, and within the expanded mat itself will allow these soils to exhibit the characteristics of stronger granular soils. The use of Geoweb can greatly reduce the need for expensive granular materials.

Applications:

  • Road base construction in weak soils
  • Railroad base construction
  • Channel protection for high-flow applications
  • Steep slope protection and stabilization
  • Retaining wall construction (gravity type)
  • Weak subgrade reinforcement
  • Road patching and repair

Geogrids to Enhance Performance of Granular Soils

Heavy Duty Cast Iron Slide Gates

Sluice gates are comprised of two major parts: the frame and the slide. Both the frame and slide have embedded bronze seating strips, which are pressed together by the attached wedging devices when the gate is closed. The frame outlines the opening in the wall that requires flow control. The slide, when fully inserted into the frame, blocks the flow of liquid. As the slide is raised it proportionately uncovers the area of the opening, until the opening is completely uncovered.

Water pressure pushing the slide toward the wall is called seating head, whereas water pressure pushing from within the opening is called unseating head. Gates are rated by the amount of head that they are capable of withstanding. For example, a model 55-20 gate can withstand 55 feet or 17.0 meters of seating head, and 20 feet or 6.0 meters of unseating head.

Applications:

  • Process facilities where unexpected maintenance shutdowns would be prohibitively costly
  • Areas where consistent, low rates of leakage over time is important
  • Dams, dykes, critical installations or high head applications where reliability, durability and long-term performance are critical
  • Installations where debris may become trapped between the gate slide and frame during operation

Fabricated Slide Gates

Where the initial capital cost is of primary importance, the fabricated gate will offer good value. Fabricated gates generally incorporate resilient seating faces (plastic or rubber) to achieve water tightness; these seats will or may require replacement with time and use. Economical fabricated gates do not employ wedging devices to allow for adjustment due to wearing.

Armtec manufactures a standard size range, suitable for most applications. Custom sizes can be fabricated with a cost increase. This may be required where gates must be built to fit existing structures or where certain processes require special sizing.

Applications:

  • Water treatment plants
  • Waste water treatment
  • Hydro electric power plants
  • Flood control
  • Irrigation

Overshot Gates

Overshot gates are designed for use in open-channel flows where upstream level control is required. Armtec’s unique design includes a bottom hinge and a channel-floor recess that enables the fully opened gate to lie flat on the channel floor. The premise of the design is that of a moveable weir. Overshot gates are operated by single or tandem cable hoists, specifically designed by Armtec for these applications.

An overshot gate consists of a gate leaf, hinge, and hoist mechanism. The 600 series is a self-contained unit that includes side plates and a hoist support. The action of this gate can be likened to a drawbridge hinged across the bottom of a vertical walled channel. When the gate position is horizontal (fully open), water flows through the channel end of the gate, water flows over the lip while the channel sides restrict it. Water backs up behind the gate as it reaches an angle of 60degrees, as excess water flows over the end of the gate leaf. The overshot gate can be set to any position between 0 o and 60 degrees. (0 degrees being flat or open), therefore establishing upstream level control.

Applications:

  • Irrigation canals
  • Flood control
  • Dam spillways

Radial Gates

Radial gates are designed for wide and unobstructed waterways where a light-weight economical gate with minimal hoist effort to open and close is required. A radial gate consists of a curved gate leaf, rubber seals, support arms, seal rubbing embedment and embedded pivot points. The gate leaf is of a welded construction varying in width and height as required by the size of the opening. Embedded rubbing seats are mounted flush with the wall to provide a smooth flat surface for the seals to slide on as the gate opens and closes.

Water pressure applied against the curved gate leaf is transmitted through the support arms into the pivot points, which are embedded in the concrete wall. Since the gate leaf is curved, the water also applies a pressure upward, thereby lowering the lifting force required. A smaller hoist is therefore necessary as compared to other types of gates. Radial gates are used primarily for upstream level control in open-channel installations. Flow is always one-way, against the face of the gate. Low lifting forces are required for radial gate operation, which is normally by cable hoists.

Applications:

  • Irrigation canals
  • Flood control
  • Dam structures

Miscellaneous Gates and Valves

Armtec provides a variety of gates and valves to the Water Control Industry. These are:

  • Cutwater Gates
  • Top and Side-opening Fabricated Flap Gates
  • Shear Gates
  • Bonneted Gates
  • Telescopic Valves
  • Ground Water Pressure Relief Valves
  • Flow Divider Gates
  • Mud Valves
  • Stop Logs
  • Hand Pulls

Roller Gates

Roller gates are designed to control flow through large waterway openings, where economy and ease of operation are important. They are also the most versatile gates in terms of size. A roller or fixed-wheel gate consists of a fabricated steel slide, cast iron rollers, and rubber seals. The gate leaf is a box-like design of welded construction and varies in width and height as required by the size of the opening. The thickness is determined by the water pressure. Slots at the sides of the gate opening are required for the rails and contact faces for side seals.

The thrust developed from water pressure against the gate is transmitted through the rollers to the rails and into the structure. The lift capacity required to open the gate under maximum operating conditions is minimized as the thrust is transferred to rolling friction.

Applications:

  • Small hydro electric plants
  • Water treatment plants
  • Flood control
  • Dam structures
