Laser Diagnostic Instruments

Laser Diagnostic Instruments International Inc develops and manufactures laboratory and field/remote sensing instrumentation for real-time, analytical assessment of organic compounds in various environments. Based on the years of experience, superior skills in photonics and the development of analytical software, high sensitivity instrumentation that is selectivity capable of detecting target substances even in complex mixtures have been developed.LDI3’s lead markets are water-quality analysis (environmental assessment and wastewater monitoring) and process monitoring for refineries, the chemical and water treatment industries.

Laser Diagnostic Instruments International Inc was incorporated to bring the leading-edge laser and fluorescence analysis technology and know-how to the North American marketplace. LDI3 distributes the existing product-line and works with clients to tailor the technology to meet new demands and customer-specific applications. It also maintains a laboratory at its Ottawa location to conduct application-specific development.

Laser Diagnostic Instruments International Inc incorporates the following technologies:

Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF)
LIF analyzers are based upon the capture and analysis of spectra of fluorescence response, induced in the target object by illumination with monochromatic laser emission at one or more wavelengths. LIF reading is a composite of fluorescence responses of individual compounds present in the target object.

Spectral Fluorescence Signature (SFS)
An SFS is a result of measuring a target’s full-spectrum fluorescent response excited with a set of consequently scanned laser lines. It is recorded as a multi-dimensional matrix of intensity and spectral parameters. Various organic compounds are manifested in such a matrix as specific structural singularities representing the SFS.

Ultra-Sensitive Remote Detection (USRD)
In close cooperation with Passat Limited, LDI³ is developing USRD technology for the remote detection of trace chemicals in real-time. USRD technology will have a “dog’s nose” sensitivity level (0.1-1.0 parts-per-billion) at a distance of up to 5 metres and 100 parts-per-billion at 30 metres.

Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS)DOAS technology relies on the unique absorption spectrum of a gas when it is illuminated with a reference light source. A light beam passes through a column of gas, specific wavelength-dependent absorption occurs, and the spectrum of absorbed light is recorded and analyzed.

Environmental monitoring
Laser Diagnostic Instruments International Inc remote sensing technology provides users with the tools to conduct broad and accurate environmental surveys of both water and ground in stressed environmental zones.

FLS LiDARs: Flexible Remote Sensing Solutions
LDI³ laser-based remote sensing systems are designed to detect and quantify several types of organic matter in water and on land. FLS LiDARs are an efficient means of conducting large-scale environmental assessment through the analysis of spatial distribution of organics ranging from oil pollution to phytoplankton.

FLS LiDARs can map data in a temporal fashion, such as before and after a storm-water runoff event, or being able to determine the source(s) of this runoff for future prevention and enforcement purposes. The use of LDI³ LiDARs to detect, map and monitor time-critical events such as oil spills is only one example of the diverse applications for which the technology can be used.

Process monitoring
LDI3 offers Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) the same outstanding Spectral Fluorescence Signature (SFS) technology provided by LDI (Estonia) to Skalar BV of The Netherlands for use in the Skalar Fluo-Imager. The Skalar Fluo-Imager measures low concentrations of organics in water such as oil, phytoplankton, phenols, humic and fulvic acids, benzene, toluene, xylene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

SFS technology has been successfully applied to water-quality monitoring at intake, liquid-control during production processes and wastewater assessment before discharge - ensuring that products and processes start safe, meet standards and remain safe at critical points throughout production.

SFS can be seamlessly integrated to streamline many OEM offerings wherever fast, reliable, cost-effective, on-the-spot analysis of organics in water environments.

Pipe leak detection

Unwanted liquid hydrocarbon releases from oil refineries and pipelines, as well as transportation facilities are critical infrastructure integrity/safety and environmental health concerns.

Real-time sensing of these releases has to deal with complex natural and anthropogenic targets usually containing a multitude of substances producing overlapping signals. Using Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF), LDI³ LiDARs are able to deal with these complex environmental factors and still detect and quantify unwanted releases remotely and in real-time.

A new airborne LDI³ LiDAR called the FLS-AM (Fluorescent LiDAR System-Airborne Modified) is well suited to pipeline leak detection.  The FLS-AM uses a built-in scanner and multi-wavelength, high frequency laser to monitor a pipeline’s surroundings up to 30 metres on either side of the pipeline itself.

The Skalar Fluo-Imager® is a bench-top, or rack-mounted instrument offering continuous flow-through water monitoring. Developed by LDI and licensed to Skalar BV (The Netherlands), the Skalar Fluo-Imager® is required instrumentation for many industrial and environmental applications.

Using the Skalar Fluo-Imager®, concentrations of known compounds are measured down to ppm levels, or lower, and compared to predefined thresholds. Outputs from threshold exceedance are extremely valuable in wastewater or water-intake applications. The instrument’s real-time capability is designed to help avoid environmental incidents and to minimize the potential for human error by triggering an alert to possible municipal drinking water problems. The return on investment in this type of equipment is easily understood.

Laser Diagnostic Instruments International Incorporated (LDI³) is an expert in laser-based and fluorescence analysis technology.

LDI3’s wealth of expertise and state-of-the-art technology offers innovative methods for analytical assessment – in the lab, in the factory and in the field.  The technology is easily integrated with existing procedures and is capable of on-the-spot analysis of complex mixtures, without the need for costly and time-consuming pre-treatment.

Years of diverse experience and global reach from Laser Diagnostic Instruments International Inc has the solution for remote sensing or process monitoring needs.
