The paper will show how using specific proprietary software reduces the vibrations, air shock waves (air overpressure) and environmental discharges due to blasting operations in a surface mineral working. The causes of the environmental discharges will be examined and the software's effect on the source will be demonstrated. The paper will also show how the software has created confidence in the controlling of blasting operations for the mine or quarry owner, to reduce the number of blasts per annum thus further reducing the nuisance of blasting. Practical examples of how the software has benefited a quarry will also be discussed. The paper will show that this is not an added cost to the operation but that the blasting in an environmental manner is efficient, reducing costs and increasing production. It is the author's belief that this technology is well suited to civil engineering bulk excavation blasting projects.
