The need for recycling our wastewater has been a glaring reality of late. Water scarcity is gradually creeping into more parts of the globe, while the existing water supplies are poorly distributed and often polluted.
Scientists are now mimicking nature's processes in the design of ecosystems for wastewater processing, with the goal of managing wastewater effectively, economically, and ecologically.
Combinations of designed ecosystems, such as hybrid systems, have already been shown to effectively process wastewater, and at a much lower cost than conventional systems.
