Editorial

The ethanol boom is coming. Ethanol which can be made from corn, barley, wheat, sugar cane or beet, is a green panacea - a clean burning, renewable energy source that will see us switch from dwindling oil wells to boundless fields of crops to satisfy our energy needs.

With high energy prices and mounting concerns over human induced climate change, there is an intense interest in renewable energy. The leaders of the European Union have agreed on a target of 20% of renewable sources in EU energy consumption by 2020, in exchange for flexibility on each country’s contribution to the common goal. Renewables account for less than seven per cent of the EU energy mix, and the bloc is falling short of its existing targets, both for low-carbon energy and to cut carbon dioxide emissions.

On the downside, the ethanol industry has been linked with air and water pollution on an epic scale, along with deforestation in both the Amazon and Atlantic rainforests.

Title Sustainable Transport Fuels a Case Study of Biodiesel in The United Kingdom
Author David Teal
Company Aeolus Partnership
Synopsis
In many societies, transport accounts for around a third of all energy use. The need to move away from fossil fuels is more urgent, and biofuels are seen as the best transition technology. Bioethanol, biogas and biodiesel are all feasible approaches and have proven track records in early adapter countries. Each can be utilized by existing fleets of vehicles with little or no modification.
