There is pressure from government and pressure groups alike for companies in the construction industry to involve stakeholders in a variety of decisions. However, there is a long list of involvement or engagement methodologies making it difficult to know where to start, what technique is appropriate and why. This paper provides an explanation of one of the involvement techniques, so-called stakeholder dialogue. What does all this involvement mean for the construction industry? Have you ever been in a situation where your planning application was refused? Have you ever been confronted by protestors on your site? Have you ever found you could not come to an agreement with the consortium of construction companies you are working with on a project? Stakeholder dialogue is a process of collaborative decision making convened and facilitated by an independent third party. While it can be used in high-conflict situations, it can also be used effectively in developing strategies and policies. This makes it an excellent tool for the development of an organisations corporate social responsibility strategy and policy, both with internal staff and stakeholders.
